Natural photoshop ¡Ü Photographic artists in a digital world have been dropping in ontop of the actual natural world various separate and surreal images from another place via photoshop. In layers of collage, items which are not together in real life have been slammed together. ¡Ü In In-ah Tak's photographs she has found that this collage of layering reality is unnecessary. These confluences of objects that don¡¯t belong together already exist in the real and natural life. She has found a natural photoshop. ¡Ü If we accept these images as straight up, without manipulation we have to ask ourselves if the surreal is the norm rather than just isolated. ¡Ü In In-ah Tak's work the surreal wins. There is a constant unsettling of vision. There is a conflict which appears normal in time. There is difference and visual anxiousness. There is an awfulness of how we have made the natural world unnatural. ¡Ü In-ah Tak has found the disturbances that are normal in our everyday world. The signage of indicating what we are selling dominate. The signage is way out of proportion to the landscape or cityscape of the horizon line and mountain. The crabs on the outside of the building where a crab restaurant is so large, it seems to crush the outside of the building. ¡Ü The dinosaurs do not belong on a beach park view, but they could. We are in a paleolithic world ¡Ü In accepting in-ah tak's photographs we buy into the normality of such massive distortion in the natural world. As an artist she makes the images seductive in frame, in color, and in digital method of rendering through the camera and in printing the image. We as viewers want to be in the photos because they look so good. ¡Ü Once there, in the photographs, we as viewers realize the images In-ah Tak has made, disturb us on a massive level. Watch out or we will be sucked in to believe this the normal and expected way of life. ¡Ü Robert Venturi is his book on Las Vegas architecture outlined the outrage of buildings that had signage which dominate its purpose. Andy Warhol in his art patterned a repeated image to match the amount of ongoing consumer signs we have to deal with. Richard Prince extolled the virtues of the Marlboro man in their cigarette ads. All these artists and events predicted the surreal world that Jean Baudrillard in his ¡ºsimulations¡» calls hyperreal¡¦ Life is signs that dominate us in an ongoing mirrored existence known only to itself. ¡Ü In-ah Tak follows this tradition and she has found a natural world with artifical overbearing signs here in Korea. Her photographs are important because they counter the usual expectation that they were done by photoshop layering. In examining the work, in seeing the prints pile up in our imagination and vision, we see that In-ah Tak has photographed the actual world without manipulation. ¡Ü This means we are living in the hyperreal naturally. We are in a natural photoshop. ¡á GERALD PRYOR
